5 Stages of Candida Overgrowth
The most common question we get about candida overgrowth is, “How long will it take to heal?”
“Why do certain individuals need multiple rounds of CCWS Candida Cleanser while others are all cleared up after one treatment?”
For me to answer that, it’s important for you to understand that candida-related disorders occur in sequential stages. Having symptoms of advanced or systemic overgrowth could mean that a longer cleanse is needed, while early-stage symptoms can usually be resolved more quickly.
You will always have a background level of Candida yeast present in the digestive tract, its normal and natural. Candida yeast eats up excess sugar and toxins in the diet and serves as a food source for your beneficial gut bacteria. However…
Candida becomes a problem when it is allowed to grow out of balance, mutate into it’s fungal form where it grows hyphae, or roots, that penetrate your gut lining. From here it enters your bloodstream, releases mycotoxins that attack your organs, and it begins to degrade your body and all it’s systems.
Candida fungus is what starts to decompose the human body once we die. Harbouring a fungal infection while still breathing is essentially having it eat you alive from within. I know, it’s not pretty picture. Speaking from personal experience, having fungal candida is a living nightmare. If overgrowth is allowed to progress, the symptoms and problems become chronic and dangerous.
Where do you fall on the spectrum of candida overgrowth severity? Let’s see whether any of your issues fall within the 5 stages of overgrowth.

It’s important to understand that everyone experiences Candida overgrowth differently. The following is a spectrum of symptoms we’ve categorized according to how Candida proliferates, mutates, and grows in the body, spreading from mucosal membranes to tissues and organs.
Here are the 5 Stages of Candida Overgrowth
Stage 1
Candida grows in the body’s mucus membranes where its always present at low levels – the mouth and entire digestive tract, skin and genitals. Candida is usually kept in check in these areas by our beneficial bacteria, but antibiotics and a high-carb processed diet throws this out of balance. Candida begins to overpopulate these areas of the body causing the beginning of the infection. Symptoms manifest in the mouth, nose, skin, sexual organs, and respiratory system. Often they get little to no attention because they are common amongst people today and still considered somewhat ‘normal’.
- Cravings for sugar and/or alcohol cravings
- Vaginal yeast infections & UTIs
- Digestive issues: gas, heartburn, bloating, constipation, diarrhea
- Skin conditions: rashes, eczema, acne, liver spots
- Recurring infections of thrush, bronchitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis, strep throat, staph infections
- Allergies to foods, chemicals, dust, fungus, yeast, molds, and hay fever
- Severe PMS
- Bladder weakness/ UTIs
- Bad breath and body odour
- Unexplained anger/rage
- Difficulty sleeping
Stage 2
Candida takes over the gut and passes into the blood stream. It does this by out-competing beneficial microbes and releasing harmful metabolic wastes (mycotoxins) both of which inflame the intestinal wall causing leaky gut allowing Candida to break through and enter the blood supply. Once in the blood, this is when Candida really starts to progress into a fungal infection spreading it’s invasive fungal colony. Issues become more chronic and symptoms emerge throughout the body. Symptoms may include all of symptoms of level one as well as level two.
- Unexplained weight gain or inability to keep weight on
- Ear infections, tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
- Chronic muscle, joint and body pain, arthritis
- Headaches and/or migraines
- Fatigue
- Fibromyalgia
- Acid reflux
- Dizziness/vertigo
- Bladder and kidney infections
Stage 3
Candida colonies can take root in other parts of the body such as muscle, bone, eyes, and any other area receiving blood flow. At this stage your behavior and mental health begins to be affected as the fungus is now likely spreading beyond the blood-brain barrier and establishing in new locations throughout the body. Stress on our body’s immune system and eliminative organs causes deep fatigue. Symptoms may include all of level one and two.
- Forgetfulness, memory loss, mental confusionInability to concentrate or focus
- Unable to think of words, switching words and letters around when speaking/writing
- Loss of skills you previous had (ie. typing or playing music)
- Muscle twitching
- Violence, aggression
- Thyroid disorders
- Endometriosis
- Depression
- Epileptic seizures
- IBS, diabetes, hypoglycaemia
- Infertility, erectile dysfunction
- Irrational thoughts, phobias, unusual fears, panic/anxiety attacks
Stage 4
The fungal infection becomes systemic, overgrowth spreads to new areas of the body including major organs. Severe health issues become entrenched unless reversed through major lifestyle and dietary changes including gut rehabilitation, deep liver cleansing, detoxification, and eliminating Candida.
- Endocrine system failure
- Adrenal fatigue & Chronic fatigue
- Total muscle weakness
- Severe constipation
- Hives
Stage 5
If Candida is not addressed at the critical stage of Stage 4 it can progress into a fatal condition, a systemic infection throughout the entire body. At this point all organs are shutting down and the body has become a highly toxic environment, creating fertile ground for serious and life threatening disease and co-infections. If the issue is not addressed the individual may die.
